1.
Everyone has flaws And things they’re not proud of When you open up It’s like walking a tightrope But in your dreams You just keep on falling
2.
Who knows your mind Who holds your hand Then you turn around To find your way back You find your way back
3.
I didn’t mean to Get in your way Hold you back or stifle Anything you had to say I didn’t (but I did) make you afraid
4.
Missing 02:20
Did I do something wrong? Am I not understanding? Am I missing something? Is something missing from me? Or am I just missing?
5.
Dim Star 05:26
We’ve noticed your star start to dim Is something in between? Another planet? A space station? Is something jamming your transmission? Is something in between you and me?
6.
We didn’t notice you before today We walked right on by while we’re on our way And we will again when all this ends
7.
Shone 02:45
You shone in your time But then it all went so quickly by Never to be recognized ever again Except in reruns At your favorite bar Your re-enactments we all know by heart
8.
You can’t turn off You can’t go on The veil falls
9.
Unfolded 03:41
There’s nothing you could have done That’s just how it unfolded Right in your arms Just like we told you

Absence does make the heart grow fonder, doesn't it? For those not in the know, Tender Mercy is an experimental folk project by one Mark Kramer, a treasure in the Louisville scene. I've reviewed several of his prior works over the years, be it extended plays of the past, recent albums such as "Leave Little Room" or compilation tracks, along with seeing him live on several occasions in various parts of Louisville.

"The Veil Falls", released in November of last year, is his latest release to date. The minimalist artwork amid a simple CD Jacket really drums up nostalgia of a past decade so the anticipation of giving this a listen, when the time was right, is imminent.

"What If This Is All We Are" kicks in and it's like I've come back home. Kramer's soulful yet sullen croon complimented with a beautiful minimal plucking just tears at my heartstrings, each note echoing away. It's a simple yet familiar sound, always resonating with beauty, even through tones that can be sorrowful or introspective. "Find Your Way (Back)" follows in familiar territory but those little yelps that sneak in add a soulful charm.

Though this album's length is just under a half-hour, The Veil Falls doesn't "blow by" and feels so impactful with so little. "Dim Star", the longest song at 5:26, feels like a lullaby of sorts, or even a prayer as it plucks onwards, resonating sounds dimming away like the song's namesake. Other standouts include the beautiful title track and closer in "Unfolded".

It's been some time since I've visited a Tender Mercy release at length and for those note familiar expect minimalist folk with a hint of sadcore, evoking some sullen emotions. It's definitely music for specific moods and at the moment of this writing, a perfect closing listen for a long night. It's slow, sad music but all the same beautiful and thoughtful.

Highly Recommended.
